The Sure Start Maternity Grant

If you are expecting a new baby and you will be incurring additional costs related to the new baby, you should be eligible for the Sure Start Maternity Grant.  These are one-time payments that help with the new expenses of a new baby.

It is worth noting that Sure Start Maternity Grants should not affect your entitlement to any other benefits.

Are You Eligible For The Sure Start Maternity Grant?

You may be eligible for this grant if you or your partner receive the following benefits:

You must also meet one of the following requirements:

  • You or your partner is pregnant or have just given birth within the last 3 months
  • You or your partner has adopted a child or have been granted a residence order for a child within the last 3 months and if the child is less than one year old. 
  • You and your partner has been granted a parental order for a surrogate birth within the last 3 months
  • You are getting benefits for a dependent under the age of 20 who is pregnant or has given birth in the last 3 months

How Much Can You Claim?

You can claim £500 for each baby and the claim is not affected by your personal savings.

How Do You Apply For A Sure Start Maternity Grant?

You can claim the grant at any time from the 29th week of your pregnancy until your child is three months old.

If you're adopting a baby or, in certain circumstances, have been granted a residence order, you must claim the grant within three months of the adoption or date of the residence order and the child should be no more than 12 months old when you claim.

If you've been granted a parental order for a surrogate birth, you must claim within three months of the date of the parental order.

If you're waiting for a decision on a qualifying benefit or tax credit do not delay in making your claim as you must still claim within the 3 month time limit.

You, your partner or civil partner can apply for Sure Start Maternity Grants by completing form SF100 from your local Jobcentre Plus office.  Or you can download a form from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) website and return it to your Jobcentre Plus office.
