Claiming The Disability Living Allowance

If you are living with the extra expenses of disability, you may be eligible for the Disability Living Allowance, also known as the Disable Living Allowance.  The allowance is not need-based and you may have a job and receive the allowance.  The amount you receive depends on an assessment of your needs.  You may be eligible if you have care or mobility needs.

It is worth remembering that claiming Disability Living Allowance can impact your entitlement to other benefits because child benefit will be included within your income when calculating means tested entitlements.

Are You Eligible?

To determine your eligibility, you must have any of the following:

  • Physical or mental disability (or both)
  • Disability is severe enough that you need help caring for yourself, walking disabilities, or both
  • Under the age of 65

If you are over the age of 65, you may qualify for the Attendance Allowance.  You may receive the Disability Living Allowance whether or you have employment.  Your savings or income does not generally affect the allowance.

How Much Can You Claim?

There are two components to the Disability Living Allowance or Disabled Living Allowance.  The “Care Component” is for those individuals who require someone to help them care for themselves or supervision for safety.  The “Mobility Component” is for those individuals you are unable to walk or need help moving around.  Individuals may be entitled to one or both components depending on their individual circumstance.  The components are paid at different rates depending on your disability and seriousness of disability.

How Is It Paid To You?

The Disabled Living Allowance is paid by direct deposit in to any account of your choice including your bank, building society, or other account providers.  You may also ask that someone else receive the allowance on your behalf.
