Social Fund Crisis Loans

If you need help in an emergency or disaster, you may be eligible for an interest-free loan called the Crisis Loan.  A Crisis Loan does not require that you receive benefits for eligibility.  You may be required, however, to pay Crisis Loans back after a specific period of time. It is worth noting that a crisis loan should not affect your entitlement to any other benefits.

Are You Eligible For A Crisis Loan?

To be eligible for the Crisis Loan you must meet the following requirements:

  • 16 years of age or over
  • Unable to pay for basis living costs that could result in serious risk of health or safety of you or your family
  • Unable to pay for something else that could result in serious risk or health of your family
  • Don’t have enough money to meet the immediate short term needs of yourself or your family because of a disaster or crisis event
  • Without the loan there will be serious danger to you or your family’s healthy or safety

You may also be eligible if you are over the age of 16 and you have been getting a Community Care Grant but you are moving out of institutional or residential housing and you don’t have enough money to pay advance rent to a non-local authority landlord.

How Much can You Claim?

There is not limit set on the Crisis Loan.  The amount that you will be able to claim depends on your individual circumstances, your savings, and whether or not you have previously borrowed from the Social Fund.

How Do You Pay Crisis Loans Back?

Crisis Loans are required to be paid back. If you qualify for the loan you will have to make an agreement to pay it back.  Your Jobcentre Plus advisor will be able to walk you through the loan and repayment plan.  The plan will be set so that you will be able to afford to pay it back.  If you are on benefits, the loan is normally paid out of your benefit payments.  The Crisis Loan does not acquire interest and you only pay back what you have borrowed.
