An Overview of Child Tax Credits

The Child Tax Credit is a means-based benefit.  Your individual circumstances will decide how much Child Tax Credit you are entitled to.  The credit is paid to the parents or guardians of children or young people who are in school.  The credit is paid by the government and is distributed by the Inland Revenue.

Are You Eligible for the Child Tax Credit?

To determine if you are eligible for the Child Tax Credit you must meet these requirements:

  • Responsible for at least one child under the age of 16
  • Or young person in full time education at school or college
  • Or who is participating in an approved training program such as the Entry to Employment program

Credits are based on each individual’s circumstances, so you must provide HM Revenue & Customs with required information:

  • Income
  • Partner or civil partner’s income
  • Children in your family

How Much Can You Claim?

The amount of Child Tax Credit that an individual may claim depends on your annual income.

The payment is made up of two elements:

  • a family element paid to any family with at least one child and worth up to £545 (2006-2007 tax year)
  • a child element paid to each child in the family and worth up to £1,765 (2006-2007 tax year)

You may be eligible for more if you have a child under one year old or if a child is disabled.

Another tax credit that you may be eligible for is the Working Tax Credit if either you or your partner is working.  This includes a childcare payment that helps families who are working and send their children to childcare.

How Are Child Tax Credits Paid?

The Child Tax Credit is paid directly to the carer of the children in the family.  You can choose the frequency of the payments.

Payments are available weekly or monthly.  The credit is paid by direct deposit into your bank, building society, Post Office or National Savings Account.
