Claiming Child Benefit

Any individual, who looks after a child under the age of 16 or 19 if they are enrolled in full-time education, may be eligible for child benefits.  This benefit is paid per child with higher rates for the oldest child.  It is not a requirement that you are the child’s parent to obtain the child benefit.  Child benefit is not a contributory benefit and will be paid to you even if you have not made sufficient National Insurance Contributions.  Child Benefit is a tax-free benefit.

How Do You Claim Child Benefits?

A common question is "How do I claim Child Benefit?".  Well, basically you should be applying for Child Benefit as soon as your child is born, a child or young person lives with you, you adopt a child, or you begin contributing to the child support to a child.

To obtain the Child Benefit you may need to complete a clam form and submit the child’s birth or adoption certificate. You may also obtain a “Bounty Pack” from the hospital when your child is born.  Forms may be completed online at the HM Revenue & Customs website.
